Silicones (Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane (D5), Cyclotetrasiloxane (D4), Cyclohexasiloxane (D6)) are synthetic polymers widely used in makeup primers, hair products, and face creams. They are added to give a smooth, "blurred" finish to the skin and a swipey, silky feel.
Main concerns: silicones form a film on the skin that traps bacteria and debris and prevents the skin from breathing. D4 and D5 are bioaccumulative environmental pollutants — they break down very slowly and accumulate in aquatic ecosystems. The EU is restricting D4 and D5 in rinse-off products from 2027.
